Appleton Forestry Nursery was started in 1978 to provide local, native plants for reforestation and restoration. Nursery manager Patricia Canfield Appleton is a graduate of the College of Natural Resources at U.C. Berkeley. Harold Appleton is a Registered Professional Forester specializing in revegetation and erosion control. The plants we provide are mostly native trees and shrubs that are grown from seed collected in Sonoma and Marin counties. We will contract grow plants (including native grasses) from other counties in Northern and Central California. Over the years, we have found that the native riparian hardwoods have the best survival and growth if they are grown in Deepots and Treepots. These containers are 10" and 14" deep, respectively, and practically eliminate root spiraling and deformation. We grow some larger plants in the 18" deep Treepot 4 (aka Citrus pot). Native grasses and coast redwoods are grown in 8" deep Super Cells.
For contract growing, one year lead time is advisable. For most of the tree species, we collect seed in the fall, seed into containers in the winter or spring, and outplant the following fall or winter. Grasses and willow cuttings can be grown to size in a shorter period. The nursery also provides individual tree protectors and weed mats. The tree protectors reduce damage to trees from deer, mice, voles, and beaver. The weed mats are porous fabrics which inhibit weed seed germination under the mats while conserving soil moisture.
