Not long ago it was difficult to find a nursery which carried native plants. Fortunately there are now many fine native plant nurseries specializing in the native species of their region. Each of these nurseries grows a variety of native plants useful for native plant landscaping and in habitat restoration projects. Because it is important to protect the genetic integrity of native plant communities which are being restored, many of these nurseries specialize in the contract growing of locally collected native plant materials for use in revegetation projects. You should also contact your local Department of Fish and Game biologist for information on precautions which should be taken, and permits which may be required, when collecting plant materials for restoration projects. The Habitat Restoration Information Center has compiled a list of some of the most commonly followed collection guidlenes: Guidelines for the Collection of Native Plant Propagules for Habitat Restoration Projects. The following native plant nurseries encourage you to contact their staff when planning your restoration project. They can help guide your decisions on the proper type of plant propagule(s) to use depending upon your site conditions and other site constraints. Because these nurseries have a great deal of experience in propagating native plants they will be able to help you set a realistic schedule for the collection and growing of the desired quantities of plant materials which you will need at the time of plant installation. And, being familiar with native vegetation they can help you diversify your plant pallette and include native plant species which are otherwise unavailable for purchase. |
